SUMMARY:When Boston Was Closed: Ordinary Bostonians and the Intolerable Acts
DESCRIPTION:This year for the first time\, we’re adding to our popular fall lecture series by offering a new live-streamed lecture in the summer. Our summer lecture coincides with Civic Season\, the period between Juneteenth and the Fourth of July. Dr. Adelman’s lecture will be live-streamed at 6:30 pm on Tuesday\, July 2\, and the recording will be made available online afterwards: \nWhen Boston Was Closed: Ordinary Bostonians and the Intolerable Acts \nOn June 1\, 1774\, British officials shut down the port of Boston as punishment for the dumping of East India Company tea six months earlier. Overnight\, ship traffic stopped and the wharves fell silent. In this lecture\, Joseph M. Adelman will discuss how Bostonians lost access to goods and work that they relied on and explore how working people coped with the economic fallout. \nJoseph M. Adelman is an associate professor of history at Framingham State University and an associate editor of The New England Quarterly. He is the author of Revolutionary Networks: The Business and Politics of Printing the News\, 1763-1789. \nWatch the livestream here! \n\n\n

SUMMARY:"The 'New' Catholics Come to Town"
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Puleo\, Author and Historian \nWhen thousands of immigrants from Southern Italy flocked to the North End in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, their Catholic religious practices shocked the Irish diocesan hierarchy. Stephen Puleo will discuss what this reveals about why this group left Italy\, how they viewed religion\, and how their presence shaped the North End. \nPart 3 of the Paul Revere House’s 2023 Lowell Lecture Series. This series examines the impact of shifts in religious traditions on the evolution of the North End with regard to cultural expression\, demographics\, political affiliations\, and economic status. The 300th anniversary of Old North Church and the 150th anniversary of St. Leonard’s Church signal an opportune time to look broadly at how religion helped shape neighborhoods\, cities\, and the nation. \nAll lectures are free and in person at Suffolk University. Live streaming will be provided at https://www.facebook.com/gbhforumnetwork and https://www.youtube.com/gbhforumnetwork. Recordings for later viewing will also be available via GBH’s Forum Network. \nPresented in partnership with GBH\, the Suffolk University History Department\, Old North Illuminated\, and the North End Historical Society\, with funding from the Lowell Institute. SUMMARY:“Puritans” and Others in 17th-Century Boston
DESCRIPTION:Prof. David Hall\, Bartlett Professor of New England Church History Emeritus\, Harvard Divinity School. \nProfessor Hall will show how the diaries of people such as Samuel Sewall and Cotton Mather along with the notebooks of John Hull\, help us understand how early Boston functioned. These sources illuminate how puritans led their lives and how others disputed or agreed with them as some groups\, such as merchants\, were more attuned to England than to any local heritage. \nPart 1 of the Paul Revere House’s 2023 Lowell Lecture Series. This series examines the impact of shifts in religious traditions on the evolution of the North End with regard to cultural expression\, demographics\, political affiliations\, and economic status.
