Lace Making Demonstration

September 13, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
a woman in colonial clothing making lace by a traditional method

Throughout the 18th century, Ipswich Massachusetts was the largest commercial producer of lace on the North American continent. Continental production became even more important during the years leading up to the American Revolution when provincial citizens began boycotting imported English goods. Lace of all types from simple tapes to lavish and expensive silk trims were made by the women of Ipswich. Lacemakers Rebecca Audette and Susan Thomson will demonstrate the tools, techniques, patterns, and history specific to Ipswich bobbin lace from Massachusetts during the fourth-quarter of the 18th century.
